You Like Me! You Really Really Like Me!

Lately, I've spent a lot of time in front of a computer.  Each time someone sends us art or photos for the Art Book, I take a peek at their website or blog.  Is there a support group for Blog addiction?  I might need an intervention soon.

The great thing about blogging is that there is a lot of camaraderie.  Most people have blog rolls that list what they are reading.  So you click on a link.  And you read.  And you click.  And you read.  And you click.  And you read.  The next thing you know, its midnight.

And the point of my story?

This  evening after following a number of links, I was led to Home is Where the Hounds Are.

They've given us an Inspiration Award!

As part of the award, you are asked to share other blogs that inspire.

Here's what I've been reading:

  1. Sweetheart's Story:  http://sweetheartsstory.blogspot.com/   This is a true Cinderella story.  Sweetheart was found abandoned in Oklahoma.  Chained to a tree with nothing to eat or drink, she weighed only 31 pounds.  Her waist was about the same size as a soup can.  Nearly a year later, she is a thriving, happy hound.
  2. Brother 2 Bother: http://brother2bother.blogspot.com/  The adventures and misadventures of littermates, Nelson & Bully adopted into one family.
  3. Xan's Art:  http://xans-art.blogspot.com/   Xan is a talented artist who contributes a lot of her time and talent to raising funds for various adoption groups as well as OSU GHWP.
  4. Shutter Hounds:  http://mralexthedog.blogspot.com/  Fabulous photographer Steve Uyehara shares photos of his hounds.  Steve's photos also appear on the OSU GHWP website.
  5. Greyt Days:  http://greytdays.blogspot.com/  Ever think that your home is too small for a Greyhound?  Nonsense.  This is the blog of a hound living in NYC.
  6. Dogs In Canada:  http://www.dogsincanda.com/blog/?p=3413  Great blog about, well, dogs in Canada.  Lots of useful info on training, medical, etc.  Part of Canada's oldest canine magazine.  This was typically dedicated to Kennel Clubs, but an overhaul a few years ago made it more "pet friendly".
  7. The Little White Monster  http://thelittlewhitemonster.blogspot.com/  Again, great photography & philanthropy combined.  Lots of info on helping Galgos in Spain.
  8. Dogs Rock http://www.xdogsrockx.com/  You've gotta love the title.
  9. The Houndie Times http://thehoundietimes.typepad.com/the-houndie-times/  A greyhound adopter inspired to do more to eliminate canine cancer by her dog Ellie.
  10. This one is a tie.  Everyone's favourites.  Tales and Tails.  Never Say Never Greyhounds.  Cult of the Greyhound.
Thanks to Angela (another East Coast greyhound adopter) for giving us the Inspiration Award.  I look forward to reading Home is Where the Hounds Are for years to come :)

Back in Business

Hi All,
After having a mini panic attack today, we are back in business.
Please continue to send art and photos to erin@truenorthgreyhounds.ca
Thanks!

Bounce Back

Nope, we're not talking about rehoming greyhounds.

Bounce back refers to some of your emails.  I got a heads up this morning from a few of you.  Thank you so much!  Apparently, our inbox has reached its capacity.  This is a good thing (Yay!  Lots of you want to participate) and a bad thing (Oh! No! You're submissions are being returned).  Despite our best efforts to stay ahead of all the large files that we've been asking for, we've failed.

Please give us 24 hours and resubmit to erin@truenorthgreyhounds.ca. Or if you are in a rush, info@truenorthgreyhounds.ca will work immediately.

Our sincere apologies to all who are trying to send in art work & photography.

Did You Know?

Prior to 1997, twenty-five retired racing Greyhounds lived at the OSU veterinary hospital  as part of the blood donor program.

When Dr. Couto took over the animal blood bank, the  Greyhounds that lived in the hospital were placed into homes where they live as pets.

Under the new program, retired racers are adopted or fostered by students, faculty, or staff and donate blood 4 to 6 times per year.

          • You and your vet can't figure out what's wrong?
          • Maybe your hound got a diagnosis and you would like additional information.
          • Or a second opinion.
      • Research Papers
        • Would you like to know more about your greyhound's health?

Enough About Me. Let's Talk About U...OSU

Up to this point, details of the Art Book Project have dominated our Blog.  So, enough about us, let's talk about OSU's Greyhound Health & Wellness Program (GHWP).

Recognizing that there was a need to know more about the physical anomolies in Greyhounds, The GHWP was founded in 2004 by Dr. Couto.   A year later in 2005 the Greyhound Health and Wellness website was launched.  The GHWP is not funded by the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine.  It survives solely from donations, sponsorships, and research grants.   In 2010 a “Membership Based Website” was launched to help alleviate the financial strains on the Program.

Membership dollars enable the GHWP to:
1. Support health studies in Greyhounds and other sighthounds.
2. Continue to provide chemotherapy at no cost for retired racers.
3. Provide financial support to owners who cannot afford healthcare for their hounds
(if their dogs are evaluated/treated at The OSU Veterinary Medical Center).
4. Organize The Ohio State Annual Greyhound/Sighthound Conference.
5. Publish and disseminate current information on Greyhound/Sighthound health care.

When you become a member, you also have access to a quarterly newsletter, research publications and an email consultation service.

Visit their website at https://greyhound.osu.edu/index.cfm to learn more about becoming a member.

Rates for the current year are as follows:

Membership TypeAnnual Rate
Greyhound Owner$99
Veterinarian$149
Greyhound Breeder, Adoption Group, and Trainers$99
